ADP MAKES HISTORY AT MAY 20th STATE COMMITTEE MEETING

BYLAWS CHANGED TO BE INCLUSIVE OF GENDER IDENTITY, WRITTEN BY OUR CHAIR RAY BRADFORD

Via the Arizona Democratic Party:

“At this Saturday’s state committee meeting, the governing body of the Arizona Democratic Party unanimously approved to change the party’s bylaws to include language that embraces all persons regardless of gender identity to have greater accessibility to the party’s leadership positions.

In an unprecedented and very progressive action, the Arizona Democratic Party is leading other state parties, and even the national party, to make a concerted effort to be more inclusive of transgender and non-binary gender individuals.

Changes made to Article III Section’s 1 and 2 of the Arizona Democratic Party’s bylaws include:

  1. The first Vice Chair of the Arizona Democratic Party must identify as a different gender than the Chair, as opposed to must be of a different gender from previous bylaw.

  2. The State Committee eliminated the 3 male and 3 female Vice Chairs requirement and replaced it with 6 Vice Chairs where no more than 3 can identify as the same gender.

Statement from the Arizona Democratic Party LGBT Caucus Chair Ray Bradford:

‘As Democrats, we embrace the inclusion of all people, regardless of gender identity. As our party continues to move forward, we look for ways to ensure our party infrastructure and administration embody our shared values and ideals. It was time to modify our bylaws to increase accessibility to positions of power. In that vein, we offered this change. We understand that this is not perfect, and that more changes will occur in the future to create an environment wherein every Democrat feels they can attain and access office within our party. This is a small step forward for us all.'”
